The Island Institute partners with individual fishermen and fishing organizations throughout the Gulf of Maine, from Cape Cod to the Bay of Fundy, to increase our collective knowledge and understanding of the fisheries, and to enable responsible management of the resources on which we all depend.

The Institute works towards sustainable, healthy and productive marine resources by:

Convening fishermen, researchers and managers to draw upon fishermen’s knowledge of fisheries and marine habitats in order to improve the quality of fishery-management decisions;

Supporting research and collaborations that engage fishermen, state and federal agencies, and research institutions to study the ecosystem of the Gulf of Maine;

Enabling place-based marine education through working with local schools and educators to implement innovative projects and new curricula.
