Libraries

Like historical societies, libraries in year-round island and working-waterfront communities are important repositories of knowledge that mirror their communities' resources.  Island libraries not only have some of the highest per-capita circulation rates in the state but also serve as critical gathering places, providing  relaxing and comfortable public spaces for community members.

The Energy of Volunteers

Island libraries are often small organizations that depend on the time and energy of volunteers.  They are also rapidly changing institutions, with new capabilities made possible by the Internet and by digital cataloging software.  The Island Institute is committed to helping libraries in year-round island and coastal communities continue to be important social and educational resources.
