Rockland, Maine-Archipelago Fine Arts, the Island Institute's art gallery at 386 Main Street in Rockland, will open its major spring-season show with a reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 21, featuring "Coastal Edges," an exhibit of new works by coastal Maine resident Sally Loughridge. The show will feature her latest soft pastels and will run until June 28. Gallery hours for Archipelago Fine Arts are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Loughridge's new paintings examine the ever-changing junctures of land and sea, highlighting and honoring the natural elements that shape our coast. This show reflects her long-standing fascination with the intersections of sea, land and sky, and expands her focus on capturing this dynamic, three-dimensional encounter of sea volume greeting land mass, wrapped in a blanket of air and light.

"I look and often wait for those transitory and transformative moments when the light plays upon the coastline in exceptional ways," says Loughridge. "I hope that my paintings will stir the emotions and curiosity of the viewer, heighten appreciation of our natural coastline and increase commitment to its protection and conservation."

Archipelago manager Amy Putansu, is excited about ushering in the spring season with an artist whose works have long been in demand at Archipelago. "Sally's paintings have touched many people who visit our store, and we're delighted to welcome her as a featured artist." A gallery of images from Loughridge's show will be available on the Archipelago website, www.thearchipelago.net, beginning on March 21.
