Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Services

Through Geographic Information Systems (GIS), scientists, community planners, students and others use computer software to organize and display geographic information to show relationships between different layers of information. They can create and analyze layer upon layer of information displayed on satellite maps of a given area. GIS services enable the Island Institute to effectively demonstrate the influence and significance of multiple factors in the Gulf of Maine ecosystem in an organized, interactive visual format.

Tremendous Tool

The Island Institute has invested in using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as a tool to help local decision-makers gain access to the high-quality planning information that will enable them to make informed decisions about the future of their communities. Ranging from innovative research projects on a national and international level to community-integrated GIS with Maine middle-school-students, GIS is an important method to help plan for the future.

We are committed to using this tremendous tool to help advocate for the future of the year-round island and working-waterfront communities in the Gulf of Maine by:

Producing original, important research to highlight issues affecting coastal Maine and to promote informed advocacy options;
Educating communities and students about how they can use GIS to help with local planning efforts.
