Alternative Energy

Because most basic services, such as electricity, communications infrastructure, oil and gasoline, must all be transported to the islands, their rising costs are becoming prohibitively expensive for many islanders.

Collaboration

In order to be sustainable, island and coastal communities need to be affordable. They must also address the impacts that they have on the environment. To address these issues of economic and ecological sustainability, the Island Institute has recently initiated multi-faceted efforts to investigate and develop alternative energy.

We are currently partnering with the Swan’s Island and Fox Islands Electric Cooperatives to explore the feasibility of developing community-wind projects. If constructed, these small-scale and community-based projects would provide electricity for Vinalhaven, North Haven, Swan’s Island and Frenchboro.
