Affordable Coast Campaign

As the appeal of Maine’s coast continues to attract increasing numbers of seasonal residents, many year-round residents have found that the coast that generations of their families have called home and from which they made a living, is no longer an affordable place to live or work.  The Affordable Coast Campaign, inaugurated in 2007, focuses on various initiatives to help year-round residents and workers remain a vital part of the Maine coast.

The Affordable Coast Fund is a grant program established in 2007 that addresses two critical issues facing Maine’s year-round island and coastal communities: the lack of affordable housing and diminishing saltwater access for those who depend on fishing for their livelihoods. Two grant streams—Affordable Housing Grants and Working Waterfront Grants—have provided more than $150,000 to date to help Maine communities, families, and fishermen acquire  property and technical assistance, and to promote community sustainability.
